WHY CHOOSE TGE SURGE ARRESTERS - 7 Competitive Advantages

Table of Content [Hide]

TGE is one of the few manufacturers worldwide that controls the entire surge arrester value chain — from MOV development to finished product. This integrated capability, combined with rigorous testing and decades of field experience, delivers measurable advantages for distribution system operators.

    1. Proven MOV Expertise

The heart of every arrester, perfected over 20+ years

TGE develops and manufactures its own gradient-optimized metal oxide varistors — the single most critical component in any surge arrester and the primary root cause of field failures when quality is insufficient. Over two decades of continuous refinement in formulations and sintering processes have yielded MOVs with superior nonlinear V–I characteristics and 36% higher energy absorption capacity per unit volume compared to earlier generations. These MOV blocks are trusted by major surge arrester manufacturers worldwide.

    2. Full Vertical Integration

Single-source control from raw materials to finished arrester

Unlike most competitors who rely on third-party MOV suppliers, TGE controls the entire value chain — from MOV raw materials through block manufacturing to finished distribution class surge arrester assembly. With over 100 MOV/arrester core series developed in-house, this integration ensures precise alignment between MOV electrical characteristics and arrester ratings, full traceability, and single-source technical responsibility throughout the product life cycle.

    3. Triple-Seal Longevity

Three layers of protection for a 30-year design life

TGE’s proprietary triple-seal system addresses the leading cause of long-term arrester degradation — moisture ingress. Layer 1: a glazed glass coating on each MOV block prevents edge flashover. Layer 2: a gap-free glass-fiber reinforced winding eliminates partial discharge paths. Layer 3: direct silicone rubber over-molding achieves complete external sealing, verified through sample testing. Combined with UV-stabilized, hydrophobic silicone rubber formulations qualified to Class IV pollution severity, this design supports a theoretical service life exceeding 30 years.

    4. Safer by Design

Controlled failure mode protects people and equipment

The glass-fiber reinforced winding structure provides high mechanical strength, reliable insulation, and excellent short-circuit withstand capability — verified by KEMA at 20 kA. In case of overload, the arrester core and silicone rubber housing are engineered to allow controlled arc breakthrough, preventing violent fragmentation. An in-house developed ground disconnector reliably isolates the failed arrester from the system, avoiding cascading damage to surrounding equipment.

    5. Certified & Field-Proven

    Independently tested, globally deployed

TGE distribution class surge arresters are type-tested by KEMA and fully compliant with IEC 60099-4, IEEE C62.11, and equivalent national standards (GB/T 11032, DL/T 815). Products are successfully deployed in demanding applications including China’s UHV power system, demonstrating durability under extreme electrical and environmental conditions. Every unit undergoes 100% routine testing of reference voltage, leakage current, residual voltage, partial discharge, and sealing integrity before shipment — with a consistent pass rate above 99%.

    6. R&D-Driven Customization

30+  patents, tailored solutions for your network

TGE operates an 11,000 m² R&D center with dedicated material development, electrical testing, and structural verification facilities. A specialized team with 10+ years of industry experience, supported by university and research institute partnerships, delivers customized arrester solutions for specific operational challenges — including non-standard voltage ratings, high-energy applications, severe pollution environments, extreme cold, high altitude, or compact installation constraints.

    30+ patented technologies

    7. Lowest Total Cost of Ownership

Reliability on the grid, not just on paper

TGE’s combination of premium MOV quality, triple-seal protection, and 100% routine testing directly translates into fewer field failures, reduced maintenance interventions, and lower replacement costs over the arrester’s service life. With 15 standard models covering the complete 3 kV to 45 kV distribution range, utilities benefit from single-source procurement efficiency and a total cost of ownership well below the industry average.
