    Panama, October 22 - 25, 2025

Recently, the 2025 Autumn Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission Technical Committee on Surge Arresters (IEC TC37) concluded successfully in Panama. Mr. Zhao Dongyi, Chief Technology Officer of TGE, and Ms. Liu Yuanyuan, Deputy General Manager of TGE, were invited to attend as MT4 technical experts, collaborating with more than 30 representatives worldwide to deliberate on the development of surge arrester technology and standards. During the meeting, TGE took proactive responsibility, put forward constructive suggestions, and achieved substantial results in advancing the construction of the industry's technical standard system.

Achievement 1: Submitting Core Proposals to Advocate for Specialized MOV Technical Standards

Metal Oxide Varistors (MOV) are the core components of surge arresters. However, their technical standards have long been scattered across the standard systems of different technical committees, lacking unified specifications. This has posed challenges to quality control and technological innovation in the global industry.

To address this common industry issue, TGE representatives officially submitted the Proposal for Formulating Specialized Technical Standards for MOV at the meeting and shared the Suggestions on the Development of MOV Technical Standards. The initiative aims to promote the systematization and specialization of MOV technical standards, attracting widespread attention from participating experts.

Clarifying the bottleneck of missing standards: In the proposal, TGE systematically elaborated on the necessity of establishing independent technical specifications for MOV. It pointed out that the current standard system focuses on the overall performance of surge arresters, while technical parameters, test methods, and adaptability to emerging applications at the core component level lack unified regulations, restricting the high-quality development of the industry.

Demonstrating the foundation of technical practice: With decades of technical accumulation in the MOA field and global engineering application experience, TGE has proven to the international community that sufficient technical and practical conditions exist for formulating specialized MOV standards, providing solid support for filling this gap in international standards.

Achievement 2: Gaining International Trust to Co-Host the Next International Meeting

TGE's professional insights and constructive attitude during the meeting were fully recognized by representatives from various countries. After in-depth discussions, a preliminary consensus was reached: the 2026 IEC TC37 Autumn Meeting will be hosted by China, and it is proposed to be co-organized by XIHARI, TGE, and Xi'an Jiaotong University in Xi'an.

This milestone marks a significant leap in TGE's role on the international standardization stage—from an "active participant" to an "important promoter and host". It fully demonstrates the growing influence and voice of Chinese enterprises in the global technical field.

    Looking Ahead

The Panama meeting is a crucial step in TGE's internationalization process. By deeply participating in the formulation of international standards, TGE has successfully integrated its technical accumulation and practical experience into the global technical rule system.

In the future, TGE will continue to uphold an open and cooperative attitude, collaborate with global partners for innovation, and jointly commit to the progress of varistor and surge arrester technology as well as the improvement of international standards. We will continuously contribute to building a safer, smarter, and more reliable global power system.
